The California State Assembly signed a bill extending the expiration date of white and yellow Clean Air Vehicle Stickers for single-occupant vehicles using the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOVs) lanes.
The bill, SB 535, extends the expiration date of yellow Clean Air Vehicle Stickers on hybrids until July 1, 2011. Originally, the 85,000 owners of the yellow stickers only had until December 31, 2010 to use their qualified hybrids in carpool lanes.
SB 535 also extends the expiration period for white-sticker owners of plug-in hybrids, electric vehicles and other cars that run on alternative fuels. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, will allow 40,000 of these types of vehicles to roam the carpool lanes until 2015.
“It is imperative that we find ways to limit our carbon footprint,” said Yee in a press release. “SB 535 will provide a great incentive for car manufacturers to develop higher emission standards and for individuals to purchase greener vehicles.”
