Algae World Europe Conference Explores Algae Commercialization

By Sheena Deol | GreenTech TV

The Algae World Europe conference, held in Brussels on April 22-23, 2010, seeks to address the four major sectors of algae commercialization, including biofuels.  These forms of commercialization range through the fields of biology, engineering, marketing and financial aspects of algae.

The purpose of this event is to provide a view on the span of the algae value chain and its commercial viability, diversity and products.  It has previously been held at Singapore, Rotterdam and Bangkok.  The event is hosted by Algae World, an organization recognized for its platform on productive exchanges in the academic, commercial and investment communities.

The 2nd Algae World Europe Conference has identified four key pillars it hopes to address in this event:
1. System Optimization for Large-scale Algae production
2. Improving Algae Productivity and Processing Efficiency
3. Development of High Value Co-products
4. Promise and Reality of Algal Biofuels

There will be top industry executives from leading algae producers sharing their views on:
- production economics
- cultivation parameters
- process integration
- carbon capture
- recycling of industrial effluents
- upscaling

Algae is considered a promising venture in the future because it contains proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids, which have many applications including Biodiesel, BioEthanol, Bio-jetfuel, Bioplastics, Biochemicals, Nutritional Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Pharmaceuticals, etc.

The conference also features a one day focus on Algal Bioenergy.  There will be a key representative of the European Commission addressing the regulatory view on Algae as a feedstock of choice for the European Biofuel.  A representative from Capricorn Venture Partners n.v. will provide tips on how to raise funds for algal biofuels project.

Representatives from companies like Cyanotech (USA), Seambiotic (Israel), Alpha Biotech (France), SBAE Industries (Belgium) Proviron (Belgium) and Culturing Solutions Inc. (USA) will be attending this event and providing a glimpse at the breakthroughs they have achieved in their production tools.

The 2nd Algae World Europe also provides an objective review of the conversion technologies for producing high value co-products touted as the key intermediate step for large-scale algae commercialization.
